We are a group of twelve people who are members of staff, parents of children in the school and others who are from the local community. Staff and parents are elected to their posts.

The Governing Board carries out three strategic functions:

  1. Ensuring there is a clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction
  2. Holding the Headteacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils
  3. Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent

The full Governing Board meets three times a year – one meeting in each term. The Autumn and Spring meetings are held in the evenings, and the Summer meeting is held in the afternoon after lunch with the children.

The purpose of the Teaching and Learning Committee is to support and encourage continuous improvement of the quality of teaching and learning in the school.

The Teaching & Learning Committee meets twice each term, to monitor and evaluate key aspects of school life. One meeting focuses primarily on studying and updating those school policies due for review. The other meeting focusses mainly on questions from governors and feedback and actions from staff regarding school data, current pupil performance and achievement reports. Governors carry out learning walks, agree and review interventions for disadvantaged children, monitor safeguarding issues and manage other strategic teaching and learning matters.

Governors are encouraged to ask questions of staff and pupils, sometimes providing fresh insight from a different perspective. Their role is to support and challenge the school leadership and to work together with the leadership on the strategic planning and direction of the school.

The Senior Leadership team have used the findings and recommendations from this committee to instigate changes in school. For example, the reading survey generated specific investment in new resources for the library and a different way of organising and accessing books in classrooms in Key Stage 2. The drive towards outstanding teaching standards has led to professional development opportunities and individually tailored coaching for members of staff.

The Resources Committee is responsible for overseeing the finances of the school, the human resources and the school’s buildings and grounds. Governors conduct occasional tours of the school identifying and prioritising work that needs to be done in order to create an excellent learning environment for the our children.

All Governors are checked with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

The Governing Board is not involved in the day-to-day running of the school – this is the responsibility of the Headteacher and senior leadership team.
